Why Everyone Calls Him “Bapu”
Long before thousands began addressing him as “Bapu,” the name was given to him with affection by his grandmother.
At the age of eight, while visiting the Vitthal Temple at Wadala, Mumbai, his grandmother lovingly called him “Bapu.” The name remained with him, and since then, it has become the natural way in which everyone came to address him.
A Childhood Rooted in Bhakti
Sadguru Shree Aniruddha Bapu was born as Aniruddha Dhairyadhar Joshi on 18th November 1956, on the auspicious day of Tripurari Purnima, at 4:35 a.m.
He was born into a family where devotion was not limited to rituals but formed an integral part of everyday life. His father, Dr. Dhairyadhar Hareshwar Joshi, was a respected physician known equally for his medical excellence and compassion towards patients. His mother, Mrs. Arundhati Joshi, was a distinguished professor of English whose scholarship and discipline shaped the family's upbringing.
Much of his upbringing, however, took place under the loving care of his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Shakuntala Narendra Pandit (née Malati Gopinathshastri Padhye), whose affection and deep spiritual values left an indelible impression upon him. His great-grandmother, Mrs. Dwarkabai Gopinathshastri Padhye, affectionately known as “Mai,” was another towering spiritual influence during his formative years.
The atmosphere in which he grew up was one where sacred scriptures were studied, the Almighty's name was constantly remembered, and devotion naturally blended with daily life. This rich spiritual heritage would later become the foundation upon which his own teachings would blossom.
Despite belonging to a well-established family, his grandmother consciously chose to educate him at Dr. Shirodkar High School in Parel rather than at an elite institution. She wanted him to grow up alongside ordinary children, understand the realities of life faced by the underprivileged, and remain deeply connected with society. This decision profoundly shaped his outlook, nurturing the humility and simplicity that continue to define him today.
An exceptionally bright student, he completed his Secondary School Certificate (S.S.C.) examination in 1972. He then pursued his First-Year Science and Interscience at Ramnarain Ruia College, completing them in 1974, before joining Topiwala National Medical College and B.Y.L. Nair Hospital, Mumbai. He earned his M.B.B.S. degree in 1978. Following graduation, he spent several months serving in rural Maharashtra, gaining invaluable practical experience while treating patients in underserved areas. He subsequently completed his M.D. in Medicine in 1982, specialising in Rheumatology.
The Physician Who Healed More Than the Body
Before his spiritual mission touched countless lives, Dr. Aniruddha Joshi was widely respected as a distinguished rheumatologist.
He served as a lecturer at Nair Hospital until 1985 before beginning his private medical practice at Dadar and Parel. His clinics were known not only for medical excellence but also for the extraordinary compassion with which every patient was treated.
Numerous patients who were unable to afford treatment were treated free of cost. His medical practice was guided by compassion, reflecting his deep concern for the well-being of every individual.
The years spent understanding human suffering as a physician would later become one of the defining strengths of his spiritual guidance. His discourses continue to display an extraordinary understanding of the human mind, relationships and the emotional struggles people encounter in everyday life.
The Beginning of a Spiritual Mission
Although spirituality had always been central to his life, Sadguru Aniruddha Bapu formally commenced his public spiritual work in 1995.
The following year, he began delivering weekly discourses at Shree Samarth Vyayam Mandir in Dadar, Mumbai. The simplicity, clarity and practicality of his teachings attracted increasing numbers of people from all walks of life. As attendance steadily grew, the venue shifted to Dr. Antonio Da Silva High School and later to the New English School at Bandra, Mumbai where the Thursday discourses continue to this day.
Unlike conventional religious sermons, his discourses speak directly to the challenges of modern life. He explains profound spiritual principles in clear, accessible language, enabling listeners to understand not merely what spirituality is, but how it can be practised amidst the responsibilities of everyday life. By drawing meaningful connections between spirituality and science, he demonstrates that the eternal truths of Sanatan Dharma are not blind beliefs but principles that are logical, rational, and deeply relevant to human life.
Many Shraddhavans describe a remarkable experience during these discourses that questions silently arising within their minds often seem to find answers without ever being asked. Others speak of leaving with renewed confidence, mental clarity and the strength to face life's challenges with greater courage.
Over the years, Sadguru Aniruddha Bapu has delivered extensive discourses on numerous sacred texts including the Vishnu Sahasranama, Lalita Sahasranama, Radha Sahasranama, Shri Sai Satcharitra, Ramraksha, Beej mantras, Naradiya Bhakti Sutra and many other scriptures, presenting timeless wisdom in a manner that remains deeply relevant to contemporary life.
Spirituality for Everyday Living
What distinguishes Sadguru Shree Aniruddha Bapu's teachings is their pragmatic approach, where profound spiritual wisdom is translated into practical guidance for daily living.
He does not separate spirituality from ordinary life. Instead, he teaches that devotion should strengthen one's ability to fulfil every responsibility—as a parent, spouse, professional, citizen and human being.
He repeatedly emphasises that true spirituality is not measured by outward appearances, rituals or withdrawal from society. Renouncing one's family or worldly responsibilities, he explains, is not a prerequisite for spiritual growth. Rather, he teaches that spiritual growth lies not in escaping the world, but in transforming oneself while fulfilling every responsibility entrusted by God with sincerity, love, and devotion.
One of the most distinctive aspects of Sadguru Shree Aniruddha Bapu's teachings is the emphasis on strengthening the mind and cultivating a strong and positive mindset. According to Bapu, the greatest victories in life are first won within one's own mind. It is for this reason that Shraddhavans chant:
Om Manahsamarthyadata Shree Aniruddhaya Namah
They regard him as the one who grants courage, competency and potency to the mind.
His guidance consistently inspires individuals to cultivate faith without abandoning reason, devotion without superstition, courage without arrogance and success without losing compassion.
A Family Man and a Spiritual Guide
Sadguru Shree Aniruddha Bapu's own life stands as a living example that genuine spirituality need not be separated from family and worldly life.
He continues to live as a devoted family man with his wife, children and grandchildren. Both his son and daughter are medical professionals, continuing the family's long tradition of selfless seva.
Through his own life, Bapu demonstrates that the highest spiritual ideals can be realised without abandoning one's worldly responsibilities. He inspires countless Shraddhavans to become better parents, spouses, professionals and citizens while steadily progressing on the spiritual path.
Science and Spirituality - Two paths, one truth
Among the many distinctive aspects of Sadguru Aniruddha Bapu's philosophy is his harmonious integration of science and spirituality.
He firmly rejects the notion that faith and science are contradictory.
He writes:
“Science and Bhakti will never ever impede each other. On the contrary, the advancement in science will only add to the treasure of Bhakti, while the power of Bhakti will weaken the destructive potential of science and strengthen constructive discoveries.”
Throughout his discourses and writings, Sadguru Shree Aniruddha Bapu has consistently urged Shraddhavans to keep pace with developments in science, technology, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, nanotechnology, and global affairs. Recognising the importance of understanding the rapidly changing world, he has also conducted seminars on these subjects, encouraging Shraddhavans to remain informed, intellectually aware, and prepared for the future.
He has frequently introduced audiences to the work of scientists and visionaries such as Nikola Tesla and Albert Schweitzer while simultaneously explaining timeless spiritual principles rooted in Sanatan Dharma.
His vision is one in which modern knowledge and ancient wisdom complement each other for the welfare of humanity.
An Author, Thinker and Editor
Sadguru Shree Aniruddha Bapu has shared his spiritual wisdom through an extensive body of literature that continues to guide and inspire countless seekers on the path of Bhakti.
ShreemadPurushartha Grantharaj
His monumental work, ShreemadPurushartha Grantharaj, comprises three volumes—Satyapravesh, Prempravas, and Anandsadhana. Drawing upon the eternal wisdom of the Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, Ramayana, Brahmasutras, Puranas, and the teachings of the great saints of Bharat, this trilogy presents profound spiritual truths in simple, practical language that is readily understood and lived by the modern seeker.
Sadguru Shree Aniruddha Bapu describes this work not as a new philosophy, but as a humble compilation of the timeless spiritual wisdom of Bharat—wisdom that has illuminated the path of seekers across the ages and continues to remain as relevant today as ever.
Since 2005, he has also served as the Executive Editor of Dainik Pratyaksha, a daily Marathi newspaper through which he regularly communicates with readers on subjects extending far beyond spirituality. His editorials address geopolitics, history, environmental issues, economics, emerging technologies and contemporary global developments, always encouraging thoughtful analysis alongside spiritual understanding.
Devotion Expressed Through Service
For Sadguru Aniruddha Bapu, devotion naturally expresses itself through selfless service.
This philosophy has inspired numerous humanitarian initiatives carried out by organisations functioning under his guidance.
These include large-scale blood donation drives, free medical camps, disaster preparedness programmes through Aniruddha's Academy of Disaster Management (AADM), Annapoorna Prasadam, environmental initiatives such as eco-friendly Ganesh idol making and many other community welfare projects.
He has also revived ancient Indian martial art through Balavidya and established Ahilya Sangh to train women in self-defence, confidence and self-reliance.
In 2005, he established Aniruddha's Universal Bank of Ramnaam, encouraging devotees to cultivate the lifelong practice of chanting the Divine Naam. As society has embraced digital technology, this initiative too has evolved with the times through digital Ramnaam books, making spiritual practice more accessible than ever.
His Revered Panchagurus
Sadguru Shree Aniruddha Bapu always describes himself first and foremost as a Bhakta. His own life is an embodiment of unwavering Guru Bhakti and complete surrender to his five revered Gurus, whom he lovingly describes in ShreemadPurushartha Grantharaj.
- Shree Gurudatta is his Karavita Guru—the Master Enabler.
- Shree Gayatrimata is his Vaatsalyaguru, the Guru who cares and nurtures.
- Shree Ram is his Karta Guru—the Doer Guru.
- Mahaprana Hanumant is his Rakshak Guru—The Guru who protects.
- Shree Sai Baba is his Digdarshak Guru—the Guru who guides.
His boundless love, faith, and complete surrender at the feet of these Panchagurus form the very foundation of his spiritual life. It is from this unshakable Guru Bhakti that his teachings, writings, and selfless service naturally flow, inspiring Shraddhavans to deepen their own devotion to God and the Guru.
“I Am Your Friend”
Perhaps the most distinctive aspect of Sadguru Aniruddha Bapu's relationship with his Shraddhavans is the manner in which he chooses to introduce himself.
He writes simply:
“I am your Friend.”
He further clarifies:
“I am not an avatar. I was always Aniruddha, I am Aniruddha, and Aniruddha I will always remain.”
Again and again, he reassures his Shraddhavans:
These words capture the essence of his relationship with those who seek his guidance.
Maryada Purushartha
The organisations functioning under the guidance of Sadguru Shree Aniruddha Bapu are built upon the three pillars of Adhyatma (Spirituality), Aadhar (Enabling support), and Aapulki (Warm affection). Through these and numerous other initiatives, his vision extends beyond the spiritual upliftment of individuals towards the welfare and well-being of humanity as a whole.
Sadguru Shree Aniruddha Bapu often describes himself simply as a loving friend. In ShreemadPurushartha Grantharaj, he declares that the sole mission of his life is to help humanity understand, practise, and firmly establish the ideals of Maryada Purushartha. This resolve finds beautiful expression in the immortal words of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj:
“Avghachi Sansar Sukhacha Karin, Aanande Bharin Tinhi Loka.”
“I shall fill this whole world with happiness and abound the three worlds with pure joy.”
“अवघाचि संसार सुखाचा करीन । आनंदें भरीन तिन्ही लोक”
This is not merely a verse he quotes; it is the very resolve by which he lives.
